RE: Java or Python - Iron Lady - 12-07-2015 Doesn't really matter what language you use. It's about personal opinion in the end. If you're good at either of these languages, you're good to go. RE: Java or Python - Megan - 12-07-2015 My personal opinion is Python because Java requires to be compiled and can be relatively slow / a memory hog where as python is reasonably fast and not to mention that my OS (linux) comes with Python natively supported where as Java is not. Uh... you might actually want to learn about this shit before commenting. 1. Both Python and Java are "compiled" to bytecode, before being run on a VM. The only difference is that in Java there is a 2 steps to this, the compilation is done by the developer, and then is run on the VM. Python does all this with one statement. But they are both doing the EXACT same thing. 2. Your speed claims are unsubstantiated with real world testing. While Python *may* outperform Java in some aspects, it does not outperform Java in all aspects. And Java is generally considered faster of the two in most cases. http://benchmarksgame.alioth.debian.org/u64q/python.html http://www.snaplogic.com/blog/python-vs-java-an-update-to-a-subjective-speed-comparison/ Hell - even the Python homepage/docs state it: https://www.python.org/doc/essays/comparisons/ Quote:Python programs are generally expected to run slower than Java programs, 3. Java is natively supported by Linux. That was the essentially the whole point of Java. Build once, deploy everywhere. K lets rephrase for the pedantic cunt 1. I can run a python script straight away with java I have to compile before i can run it 2. from my experience (I did state it was my personal opinion so no facts were provided, an opinion can disagree with a fact it is still an opinion even if it's wrong) java runs slower on my machines than python does 3. I have to install Java on both the Linux distro I use where as I do not have to install Python. RE: Java or Python - The Real Slim Shady - 12-08-2015 (12-08-2015, 07:15 PM)Megan Wrote: K lets rephrase for the pedantic cunt Pedantic?? 1. Being able to run a script right away does not mean it's not being compiled. You specifically stated that java is required to be compiled. So does Python. The number of steps it takes to do this is irrelevant. You can't state that Python is better because you need to compile Java. This is outright false. This is not pedantic. 2. You're horrible at arguments then. your Personal opinion was that Python is better. The reasons you gave should have been facts, not opinions. You outright stated that java is slower and that python is faster. You did not state "in my experience/case java is slower or python is faster". You made an outright statement, of course that is going to construed as you providing facts. Why would you provide an argument for a claim that only applies to you and not the community in general. 3. Don't throw around key words if don't know what they mean. Native support does not mean "comes installed with my operating system". You wouldn't say "Windows natively supports Solitaire and Notepad". That just sounds stupid and not the meaning of the phrase/term. RE: Java or Python - Megan - 12-09-2015 (12-08-2015, 07:43 PM)The Real Slim Shady Wrote: Pedantic?? Yes, you are being a pedant, you're picking out terminology that I didn't use dictionary definition for cause kek pedant, everyone else would've known what I mean Sir. 1. Soz I didn't state that sir, to me running a script VS compiling it is different so yeah, again personal opinion because I don't feel the need to learn the gritty shit behind languages. 2. Soz m8 that I didn't use your exact terminology but I can still offer my personal opinion without needing to add facts, I didn't state that Java was slower than python as a fact nor did I state it as "in my experience" so we're at a moot point there, I provided no evidence to prove my point so no, I did not provide it as a "fact". 3. Kek Quote:not to mention that my OS (linux) comes with Python natively supported where as Java is not. Soz I did not use "pre-installed" for you, my apologies. In conclusion, Slim wins this round cause you know, he provided facts where as I provided opinion plus he mad. So ultimately you made completely baseless claims about why Python is better than Java, and when confronted you made up excuses about how you didn't mean what you said and that the words you used meant something completely different. In which case, I am happy to be a pedant, if you *really* wanna claim that this is what it is. But I think it's just an idiot with no knowledge on the subject scurrying away with excuses when it's pointed out that they're a moron and they should actually research their claims before making them. Aww man you got me! xoxo Edit: My avatar represents MRW you owned me. RE: Java or Python - Inori - 12-16-2015 I seem to be a bit late to the party, but both are good for different things. If you're distributing your project to inexperienced, or non-programmers, I think Java's the way to go, because you can pack it up in a jar so nobody can screw it up, plus everyone already has Java installed. That said, Java is a gigantic pain in the stack trace. It's super technical and there's only one way to do stuff right, so I'd recommend python if you're dealing with an experienced crowd (ie your code is on github), you want to have some fun and be creative, or you don't want to hate yourself. Plus, python does have window support (.pyw), so you aren't missing out on any java exclusives. RE: Java or Python - Greece - 01-23-2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epXQMbnmlcY |
