Personally I'd love something other than skype since skype is a pile of shit resource hog from hell. The ONLY reason I have skype on my machine is because SL chats.
I'd be happy w/ an IRC channel. It would also give us more control of the chat vs having Microsoft looking at everything

The real issue is that people don't always log in to IRC when they go on their computer. Generally, they do log in to Skype, though.

Because we've tried it before. Multiple times. We always end up back at Skype.

I'm the exact opposite. If you notice me missing for long periods from Skype it's because I restarted my machine for some reason and always forget to load skype back up. Meanwhile, Pidgin is always up and running because I use it for work among other things.

I can set up a dedicated IRC server for us...that would give you the ability to segregate out the normal, upgraded, and staff chans like you do with skype.
