I started off knowing absolutely nothing.
My strategy was:
Lurk for a few days
Start asking questions
Learn
Get involved
It seems to have worked pretty well.

The community here at HC wont look down upon, embarrass, or shame you intentionally. If you were to post your programs along with the source code, we'd actually help you improve your abilities by giving you advice + tips through constructive criticism and whatever feedback the users feel is necessary.
Honestly, I'm an amateur hacker and not much of a programmer. I know a bit of HTML, CSS, Ruby, and Python, but that's it. Even then I suck with all of them. I was actually hoping to get better this year, but I'll be busy learning about some other things for a job until at least December. With that being said, your 'inferior' programs would probably be superior to anything I could cough up and I'm a staff member! Have confidence in yourself, and get involved with the community... You wont regret it.

Good to see someone has had a great experience on this forum and I hope to have the same. I registered around 10 minutes ago, and already I am enjoying it the site looks epic and the community is a lot friendlier than others I have, sadly, been apart of.
