Focus on the purpose of the supposed application, not an apparently bad example of someone putting it to use.

As far as it being overkill... you're probably right. Thats not to say that a computer cannot do it. The interval in his goal might be excessive, but we really dont know what his goal is yet. Now you may consider 3 seconds to be illogical and abusive. As far as user efficiency goes though it makes sense to a user that his file get saved immediately after every change without needing to save it himself.

As for windows 8, ive only met a handful of people with it, but most of the handful has some sort of issue. Have you not noticed a trend with Microsoft? every second operating system tends to have significant faults and hardware issues. Windows 95 was okay (for the time). windows 98 sucked, windows 98se was okay, windows ME sucked, windows XP was okay, windows vista sucked, windows 7 was okay, windows 8, so far, is living up to the pattern. So while removing windows 8 might seem "simplistic" to you, in this case he either needs to do that, or carry around an external wireless adapter for his laptop because his new laptop ships with integrated hardware who's latest drivers are apparently incompatible with windows 8. And it wasnt an upgrade, this laptop shipped with W8. Problem has been present since he bought it a couple months ago. So ya... i consider removing faulty software to be a good move. and theres nothing simplistic or basic about it.

I'm not going out of my way on anything, you're misunderstanding something here. I'm going by what you post, and that's all anybody has here if they were to read your posts. Perhaps you are not the OP, but my responses are to YOU, not OP, and only because of the illogical replies you've been giving thus far. If the example given was unrelated to OP, why was it stated? Furthermore, why did you use it as reason for OP's scenario if you consider it unrelated?

I don't know what his intentions are either, and he's never told us, but you took the assumption that it could be useful for notepad based on your very first response (still, and even now when you claim that you don't know what his intentions are (which seems odd to me)). The initial post you made was justifying what he was trying to do, which seems contradicting to me based on what you're now trying to say in regards to uncertainty here.

I provided why it would not make sense to do so, and I even gave better alternative solutions.

Quote:Focus on the purpose of the supposed application, not an apparently bad example of someone putting it to use.

You suggested this "bad example," and using it to support how OP's idea could be put to use, so I don't quite understand how you're implying that I should be focusing on the purpose of this software he wants to create...? :S I gave him a path in the right direction regardless, then asked him what exactly he was trying to do this for, and said it seemed illogical. Any which way you think about this, it doesn't seem logical at all. Unless this person is absolutely against using anything but notepad, which doesn't have autosave...

He still never answered the questions here related to "why."

Quote:Thats not to say that a computer cannot do it.

This is also not to say that it should be done. Many things are capable of doing something, but it is by no means proof of it being right/proper.

Quote:Now you may consider 3 seconds to be illogical and abusive. As far as user efficiency goes though it makes sense to a user that his file get saved immediately after every change without needing to save it himself.

You're still missing the point and the entire programmer's perspective here. How would it be efficient to save every 3 seconds without knowing how fast the user types, how much and how often the data gets changed, and whether that data is even important enough to be saved and not just scrapped? Also, you did read my post about the whole "Program + notepad" vs. "Notepad++ with built-in autosave" didn't you? And it would use much better methods than just every 3 seconds I'm sure.

Quote:every second operating system tends to have significant faults and hardware issues.

That's not a proof though, and all you said/implied was that Windows 8 was bad, and that it had issues. I don't see any proof of hardware issues, or what these issues were, and that they were not just user "stupidity." As far as I know, it's been proven and tested that Windows 8 runs better than Windows 7 and XP on older and newer hardware with less of a footprint for hogging resources, it has built in native support for mounting the ISO format as a device drive, better multi-monitor support, and many other things.

Quote:integrated hardware who's latest drivers are apparently incompatible with windows 8.

And this makes an OS "faulty" how exactly? Just because it's still relatively new or that people don't develop drivers for it? Btw, it's not hard to find drivers that aren't compatible with Windows 8 nowadays either.

Honestly, i dont know what you are so worked up about. but quite frankly i have no interest in debating the finer points of this. I think you're over-reacting and / or misinterpreting what I am attempting? to say. Either way im not about to start breaking down your replies statement by statement to make a point. ive got better things to do with my time. Thanks + Have fun.

If there's doubt about what you think, then this is going both ways evidently; you are misunderstanding what I'm trying to say.
