what about windows 8?

Windows 8 is a flop IMO. It's only good with touch screen laptop or smart phones. But for PC, i don't see much benefit changing to win8 if you have an OS good enough now.
As i said, it's only "good" for touch screen.

That, although I'm not sure why Windows is even being discussed in this thread the OP quite clearly asked a question about Linux.

I didn't bring it up, just replied.

I was agreeing with your post and referring to @"krypt3dkn1gh7"

"OS" is not the same thing as "distribution". A distribution is a kind of linux version. This is why Linux is open-source. You can edit anything you want, you can make your own distribution and make it the way you want it to. Ubuntu, Backtrack 5, everything like that is all the Linux core from the bottom. Windows is a operating system (OS) and is not a linux core, this is the own version of Linux, no Linux core. Windows 7 is not open-source!

RE: Linux OS.... - dR.0xYw0Rm - 10-17-2013

Well , that depends from one individual to the other.
Ubuntu for example is user friendly which means that someone non experienced with Linux would love it.
Backtrack is for pentesters.
CentOS or Redhat which are for servers.

But in my opinion Kali is the best.

I say Arch as its highly customizable to your taste..

There is pretty much no difference between any distro for programming. You can get all the essential features in any distro. All you need are the compilers (which are independent of the distro) and a text editor/IDE. Almost all popular distros can run Code::Blocks and Geany.
If you want a lightweight distro (one which has lesser features but is faster and takes less space), you might want to try Lubuntu or #! (Crunchbang Linux).
If you want a standard OS where you can get support easily, try Fedora or Debian.
but in my suggestion if you are new towards linux go for ubuntu.... you'll get all these + a newbie friendly gui.... :Thumbs-Up:

I agree with most of that apart from the last statement. Aside from the fact I personally hate Gnome 3, you can in fact use any desktop environment you like on any distro you choose
