Google it with your specs of your computer then reinstall them. Once you do that, reboot your computer. Let us know if it helped. I'm betting on what's already been stated by you and 2 others previously...infection. Tell tale signs rarely if ever are wrong on such. Provided he takes a minute to disable Window's Defender from starting and then reboots. Process of elimination will narrow it directly to the problem for the application of a logical solution. RE: Explorer.exe taking up so much CPU? - Shadow3273 - 03-13-2013 Also, I've been thinking of just wiping everything and starting over because even before the explorer.exe started taking up so much CPU my computer's performance wasn't that great. Is there a way to delete everything and just leave windows or do I need the original Windows CD (Because I don't have that). And that my friend is exactly what will be needed to begin with, is a reboot for any of the above. Including us trying to keep the matter for him as simple as possible with the most direct potential problem analysis/solution based upon the immediate information given by the young man brother. Which points directly to the potential of an infection (95% probability) and a 5% probability for Window's Defender being a smaller potential.
