Knew about it ever since it was invite-only, but I wasn't interested into joining other communities back in the day.
I think Starfall showed me it over skype or something, not entirely sure.

If memory serves correct, I believe it had something to do with Oni wanting the site to stick to worrying about the quality of posts and having a close community, as opposed to focusing so much on activity. That and opening the gates means that potentially unskilled members can join. Thus, potentially reducing the quality. Then again, things like that are relative. I'll see if I can find the original post. I could be wrong in what I said there.
