Probably the M16. It's legendary historically, designed and innovated by Eugene Stoner, and also misunderstood because of government overreach.
The US Army Ordnance Group sabotaged the M16 during the Vietnam war. By issuing ammunition with a higher grain than it was designed for, it fired much more rapidly than it should have, causing jamming. Chrome plated barrels were also rejected presumably to cut cost, causing corrosion in the humid climate of Vietnam. They're also responsible for the forward assist button. Which Eugene Stoner was strongly opposed to.

Modern successors like the MK18 are also a great option, entirely influenced by Stoner. I always joke the forward assist is as useful as "tits on a boar".
