I think it was more than that for him.
Every user is like a probe, which can give feedback on certain SE's. It's like a network of sensors. He encouraged this I think.
I assumed from what I saw on his blog that he once might have had an ambition to consult to companies or whoever wanted to protect themselves against SE.
It's quite lonely doing these unsavory things because nobody can know. So Mothered, a SE pro, was the SE pro mainly online. You can't really get recognition for it irl.
I agree. He was consistently active for 11 years, so leaving without a word is strangely out of character. He wasn't just a staff member, he was also a friend.
That said, if he were to express a desire to retire quietly I'd support him. But I never received any indicator that was the case. We wouldn't be having this conversation if it was.

That's just over 10,000 hours
If he was to spend that time again on here and he was online for 8 hours each day we would see him on the site for the next 3 and a half years
What goals are there left for him? Surely you've done everything at this point
My opinion we can make all of the conspiracies but I think the simple answer is he just fucked off I don't blame him

He didn't spend his time on the site consistently
I.e he would take short breaks he wasn't coming online that exactly 1:00 p.m. each night
And he gradually faded from the site to my knowledge he started coming on less and less
It was not a lot of activity and then suddenly leaving
To my knowledge he wasn't helping people for the whole 11 years yes?
He started helping people a few years in?
He has left but I do not understand the conspiracies what are the odds he was arrested

I agree with your sentiments entirely but I stand by what I said. All I tried to say was someone he knows IRL must know. He was in the game for many years. At least one person knows. You don't social engineer for over 20 years and not one family member or close friend knows. A couple of years maybe you can get away with no one knowing, after 20 years I very much doubt it.
I don't like arguing. I have nothing more to say.

It's true. While I knew mothered for 10+ years, we never exchanged any personal information. That's just the nature of these things. The top 3 speculations have been that he's either dead, retired, or imprisoned. Since it's been almost 6 months, it's safe to say we're unlikely to get any confirmation.
If he died, there was no family to notify me. If he wanted to retire, he did a good job of it. If he's arrested, we won't be associated. He wouldn't be the first to die/retire/be arrested. It's unfortunate, but it's also for the best. I hope he's on a warm beach with a cold drink, personally.

he was so private about his information so i'd assume logically it's nothing to do with being arrested. i haven't been active in a while so i haven't heard anything about his health or age but if he is older it seems likely that death would be the most probable cause outside of retirement. even at "retirement" i don't believe he actually got out of the game. like others have said he's been on the forum for over 10,000 hours which when looking at it is a full time job. i'm not sure if he was wealthy irl but 10,000 hours while still having a job is impressive work.

Given the "10,000 hour rule", he was certainly an expert. It's honestly why I'm leaning towards death or retirement. Jail's always possible as it wouldn't be the first time a member was arrested. However, I never had the impression he was greedy or malicious, and his opsec was unmatched. If he was a part of some sort of group, it was never advertised/operated here.
