I want to try this method by stating, that the battery exploded/started smoking, and that I threw it away because of its toxicity (in case they want to see pictures).

Is there a good chance it will work?

This shit is fucking impossible. Even with an invoice and fake pictures, you NEED an authentic picture of the damaged laptop to get a replacement. I tried this five different times: used the caught fire and disposed method, used the swollen battery method, it doesnt work. at the end you get to a supervisor and they fuck you up the ass asking for an invoice

Can you take a picture from fb marketplace or ebay and photshop some smoke coming out of the laptop?

Depends on your answer to my previous question.
Generally speaking tho, if they sent you a replacement (hopefully w/o AR hold), no cause for concern, consider it a success.
