Yes, the same applies In-store with certain companies.

For Instance, Apple checks sealed box returns at the customer service counter there and then.

I expect this kind of thing from Apple but what about 3rd party retailers ? I am going to do few legitimate test returns to see how certain shops handle sealed returns at the counter, right now I am most concerned with the like of Argos and John Lewis

Most big retailers will check, very common scam where I live and almost everything is checked for tampering

Impossible to speak for each and every third-party retailer.

Argos checks In-store  sealed box returns.

They break the seals, check the contents and If everything Is fine, a refund Is processed.

I tried yesterday at Target and they checked and opened the seals on an Apple Watch Series 7 watch. For this SE I swapped it with a older Series 4. Refund was successful. Depends on the worker that is there that is there that day.
