Hotels are pretty easy.

Simply saying there was urine on the mattress and carpet (do It yourself) which was noticed towards the end of your stay, Is quite effective to obtain a refund.
Oh God

Oh God
Disgusting, but very effective.

But if you complain at the end of the stay, won't the hotel realize you were the one to pee in the bed? Doesn't make a lot of sense, sounds like a day-one complain to me

It's not difficult at all to justify It.

Simply say the urine was towards the end of the bed where your feet are positioned during sleep, hence It wasn't noticed until a later period. Alternatively, you were experiencing a backache, so you turned over the mattress, only to find urine thereafter. Do It on the second last day of your stay - just to give It time to dry.

I can think of 20 more excuses that will easily manipulate hotel management.

Ah yes, in a non-common spot it would make more sense
Can't see myself using this but it's still an idea

I've used It a handful of times In the last couple of decades, and It's worked on every occasion.

Though, one hotel was very difficult to deal with. It took a lot of manipulation to achieve a favorable outcome.

I'm going actually on a solo trip - 4 weeks so it'd be nice to save some money on hotels.

If I use booking.com as a third-party, should I ask for refund from them? Or should I demand the refund directly from the hotel staff? Or how to go about it?

Thanks for your insights, really appreciate it.

Go through booking.com - you've paid them, so they're handling the money side of things.
