Looks like GameStop is serious about investing in NFTs, even after a net income loss of over $100 million last year.

And Apple is introducing 'extended reality' devices: https://www.wsj.com/articles/apples-metaverse-prospects-produce-real-optimism-for-investors-11641983407?mod=mhp

It's all a marketing scheme. What are they currently offering, that something like VRChat or IMVU doesn't? They might apply R&D towards bio/haptic devices, but those discoveries will gradually make their way to other platforms. Rather than teaming up with existing developers and existing universes, they're hyper-commercializing it.

Basically wouldn't express it in any other way. The gist is that these companies want to have a monopoly over our data. This includes metadata because in the modern age, everything is available in metadata. Using your phone, they can say when and how often and how long you use every single app on their cellular devices and your ISP can use that to build a profile. They don't need access to our accounts anymore to do that, they only need to be the service provider that handles requests. Legally, we're bound by their ToS in a way that allows them this liberty.

Unfortunately, we can only do so much to fight that. Here's a podcast you can check out to listen to the EFF explain how this isn't just about data. It's about a much larger picture. We're all affected by this abuse of data and misuse of these profiles for advertisements and loans and other things - all of which are beneficial to the ones providing the service and none of which are healthy for the consumer in the long term.

From what I can tell, Meta Verse is playing into vulnerabilities of our social structure and attachment ego. This will be profitable no doubt, for those who invest early. I won't be participating. I feel that the company is struggling to make $$$ so it will use the most common and most abundant source out there for profit generation: our stupidity. I caught on to a creepy video explaining Mark's vision and tbh even I thought it was off putting.

Definitely super excited for the Metaverse, I can't quite imagine how it would look like even tho I watched the introductory video.

It seems like surreal to have all these features live but we probably said same things like 10-20 years ago.

Another 10-20 years and Metaverse will be very normal and nothing exciting anymore.

I don't think there is anyway the metaverse takes off. I've gone into some of these VR "worlds" and its terrible graphics, kids screaming, and audio from peoples livings room. Its more annoying that real life.

Just appears to be a mass marketing scheme taking on the same old "FOMO" type scams by alluding to the fact that it's going to be part of some Sci-Fi style future and that we will actually need or use it, but I highly doubt it. People appreciate real experiences, that much will NEVER change.

Ah, I remember Second Life, and all the autism that came with it. Its a bunch of old boomer chucklefucks anymore.

Good times.

IMO NFT's while they have some utility, the concept is very limited IMO. It is all fiat, if people lose confidence in it, especially in its infancy like all currency that is fiat it will become worthless.

It's not gold backed so it's not secure, that's why we use the term "volatility" when talking about cryptocurrency. It has the value people place on it, nothing more.
