Thing is, amd really changed over the years, and AMD is ahead of price to performance, And because it's a CPU, you will virtually notice NO difference when using an amd cpu vs an intel cpu (expect performance) Watch any tech youtuber and they will say the same.
And you cannot upgrade your cpu as you have the best cpu available on your socket, so in order to upgrade your cpu you must upgrade CPU/RAM/MOBO all at once.

Last thing in his system that needs to be upgraded.

Yes, I thought there would've been a significant price drop.

Have you made any decision(s) since your last post?

Yes i will wait, about 3-4 years, and upgrade to newer and cheaper and affordable hardware, since in the upcoming years prices will decrease, especially on motherboards. @mothered Also i will consider purchasing a Ryzen 7 Or a thread ripper.

Good move with the Ryzen 7.

I'd be very Interested In reading your final build.

For general use you dont need 32GB or an i7 for that matter. A 1080 is overkill too unless you want to do vr or something, and Id honestly get a newer card.
Here's something I put together for fun: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jc8hcq

Whilst I certainly agree, you also need to allow for growth In both computing needs/change of usability, and demand on system resources.

Resource-hungry applications and the like are always Increasing.

I'm running VR games happily on my 5 year old R9 380 using my phone and iVRy, and Driver4VR to use my Nintendo Switch controllers. That GPU also runs comfortbly at 1000MHz. From what I've read online, RX5500TX (?) gets a very nice hash rate on Ethereum and is quite good on power consumption.

The rest of my PC is overpowered as hell though, 32GB RAM, threadripper 8 core processor, and seperate hard drives for different OSes - Windows on a 250GB SSD, Ubuntu and Kali on 250GB HDDs, encrypted. I also have a 2TB HDD to hold games and various VMs that I want to access from all of the OSes

Not In my environment.

Given I run simultaneous VMs, Inclusive of multitasking an array of computing tasks, I couldn't cope with less than 32 GB of Ram.
