It's simply used to comply with company protocol to move forward with the claim.
I just received the item, and looked at Amazon to see that a picture was taken and posted of where the item was placed at my house.
Is the DNA method still effective at this point? I'm thinking I could say something along the lines of "That must've been when nobody was home and when I got back from work hours later it was gone." The package was clearly visible to anyone passing by that couldve easily taken it. Was it placed outside your property or somewhere where a stranger could take it? If so they’ve given you the SE, they can’t prove you received it, all their info shows is that anyone at any point could have taken it thus leaving you without an item.
Should be okay to continue.
Yeah, it was placed wide out in the open at my front door. Anyone can see the package without a doubt

Perfect for the DNA. When a signature Is not present on the carrier's manifest, It's very difficult for the company to establish whether It was accepted by the account holder.
Given you didn't sign for It, you didn't personally receive It.
RE: First Amazon SE - Pumic - 01-02-2020
I just spoke to Amazon customer service and they're doing and investigation. I asked what the reason for the investigation was and their response was:
"I understand your concern , however it is important to carry the investigation so as to find where exactly the package went and to prevent this issues in future."

I've spoken to Amazon twice now. The first time they went through and investigation, and now they're wanting a police report. Does it need to be a legitimate police report that they can cross-check with the PD or can I find and fake one online?

Never falsify a police report.
They simply require It to move forward with your claim, so file one at your local police station and await their response.

I've never made a police report, or seen the process and I'm reading mixed things online. If I file one, will I have police show up at my address to interview me about the situation or can I simply file one online and that be the end of it (since they likely won't look far into a $100 potential item theft).

The police have better things to do with their time, than waste their resources on a claim that they're not Involved with In any capacity whatsoever.
I've filed countless reports on low value Items, and have yet to have an officer knocking at my door. The last thing you need Is to stress over the matter so If you're not comfortable with It, don't file a report.

Do you know approx. how long it takes to get my own PDF copy of the report so that Amazon can issue my refund?

It varies depending on their workload, and whether It falls on non-business days (weekend, public holidays etc).
It can be anywhere between 1 to 7 days.
