In layman's terms social engineering is the art of convincing someone to give you/do something for you that they wouldn't do under normal circumstances. You can social engineer literally anything you want in this planet, it just entirely depends on your skill in doing so. Most people start with basic products like pizza because they're easy to get and serve as half decent practice with little to no risk. Once skilled enough people eventually start trying to SE electronics because they can either A) be useful for whoever is getting the product or B) can be easily sold for a profit.
If you want to social engineer pure money, you're going to have to get skilled enough to the point where you can either social engineer the government or a bank, but that also comes with an insanely high level of risk.

Isn't is still against the law though? If you are manipulating a situation to your advantage by lying I would think that would still be a prosecutable offense. And there must be an obvious paper trail that leads right to the delivery door!

I'm thinking it's basically discovering and exploiting loopholes in the system, which is what I do but I do it from the keyboard not the phone.

Also what is wrong with SE'ing low value items? It's good practice and there's little to no risk as said above.
