Or, you could purchase a new one from another shop (say, Bestbuy?) and return the non-working ones as if it was the one you just got, as long as they don't check for serials

No I was told about the investigation during the initial chat yesterday in the afternoon, received an email at the end of this morning offering me with the two choices.

Internally it’s apparently treated as an RMA. At least it was for me according to the email I received. Says my RMA has been approved, I’ll be refunded and there is no need to “return the product”. I can already see the refund on PayPal.
