The Gun that Aims Itself - Oni - 05-05-2018

Saw a documentary that discusses the TrackingPoint PGF, a rifle that is able to track targets and correct aim all on its own. The documentary claims that the rifle can have complete newbies nailing targets over 1000 yards away within the first hour. It also explores the ethical concerns of making a "no-skill" rifle commercially available.

I can quite easily see the controversy this could cause with "no-skill" rifles being commercially available.

Never would have imagined this would be made, but now I've read it, I'm surprised this hasn't been a thing earlier than now.
It's implications seem interesting in relation to the military, police etc.

Agree.

Given guided missiles have been around for quite a while, I'm surprised It took this long to do the same/similar with guns.

My thoughts exactly. There are drones and and game systems that do these things.

This is crazy, what're the means of accessing the weapon? Can the common citizen buy one, if so it could cause problems

Finally, something like the smart gun from aliens.

They are available to civilians, albeit at a price of about $5000-$15000.

A hefty price tag that's for sure.

Still, It doesn't stop those who have both the funds and malicious Intent from purchasing. Although It does depend the nature and Intention of those purchasing, probably not such a great Idea for every civilian.

Keep in mind that missiles usually affect a way larger area whilst a sniper rifle would more be to take out a single target (or multiple single targets). I think it's harder to take a good shot, since usually snipers (at least in the military) have spotters which will measure things like distance, wind speed and more. This has to be calculated all on it's own, and a bullet is light so even a small calculation could give away your position. Also rockets are usually not fired from a close distance but from pretty far away, which makes easier to "adjust settings" mid-air.

True. It's a very different type of technology. However, I think we have more than had the capability for some time now. Still, it does make me think, "what will be next?"
