Job Interview! - millionandbell - 05-26-2017 So i applied to my local hospital for a IT support tech and they want to interview me! Does anyone have any tips for the interview process? I have a week to prepare. RE: Job Interview! - Vi-Sion - 05-26-2017 I have no idea how it will be but i must wish you good luck , hope you'll be able to get the job . RE: Job Interview! - JzJad - 05-26-2017 Good luck! Just recently got on with a large Networking company my self, talk about a big break love the job just make sure to do you're best when you get it! RE: Job Interview! - SxTxN - 05-26-2017 I'm not sure what this is going to be like, just don't be nervous and be honest if they ask you questions. That's all I have to say, good luck! RE: Job Interview! - Ecks - 05-27-2017 Dress professional (kackis and polo look better than a suit), smile, look them straight in the eyes, sit up straight, don't fidget (place hands on knees if you get anxious), take a short moment to think before you speak and speak clearly. I guarantee you these tips work, I have gone for a cart pushing job and ended up as a manager doing just this. Your interview might pose hard questions, but just your smart, don't get tripped up. Does anyone have any tips for the interview process? I have a week to prepare. Something very important/interesting I've learned recently about interviewing in the tech industry, especially for entry positions/ if you are new, is be prepared to interview against different personality types. I like to split it into two groups, but obviously you can subdivide further as much as you like: People who know how to code/IT and are good programmers/IT, and those that don't. Don't assume whoever interviewing you will know IT/Tech. They might be in a totally different industry and not know a bit about IT. Like a business person. I've had a few interviews so far where I was interviewing with the CEO of a startup/business person and they didn't know anything about how to code etc. They may know the industry a bit, but not much. In this case, it won't help if you come in expecting to talk about Coding/IT and that's all you talk about, because the person interviewing you will become bored and have no clue what you're talking about. When faced with this type in a entry level interview, focus on soft skills. Basically, BS your way in. What I found works best is finding something that the interviewer has some interest in (takes some finagling depending on you're social skill), and loosely basing you're interview around that, while incorporating what you know about IT/code in such a way that you sound reliable, trustworthy, and a good investment. This way, you keep the interviewer engaged, form some type of BS connection, and win the job. I've honestly found those interviews to be much tricker, partly because it's just mostly BS, tact, and trying to figure out what makes the interviewer click so you seem like a good candidate. It's also difficult to explain Code/IT topics to someone who has no idea what you're talking about. Whereas, in an interview where the person is someone who really knows IT and Code, then you're interview will probably be more cut and dry. Maybe a few questions to test your knowledge, like "A process has gone rogue and is using up XX% of Power on core #2, you're running the latest Debian LTS release, how do you kill it and save the day!?". Or if you're in a coding interview, probably some question testing you're knowledge of Data Structures. RE: Job Interview! - mothered - 05-27-2017 First Impressions count, and such Impressions make all the difference between success and failure. @insidious has provided some excellent points. I suggest you take his post under advisement. The only thing I like to add, Is "always" look the Interviewer In the eye and never look away during conversation. The latter demonstrates disinterest and/or some degree of hesitation or confusion. RE: Job Interview! - Asura - 05-27-2017 Good luck with your interview. I have yet to get employed. I recently got interviews and well, just the experience lacking is what's killing me despite the demonstrations I've provided to back up my skills upon request. The employers I've interacted with usually come with a mixture of IT questions and general questions which I was taught in college. The general questions I've been taught are: Code: 01. Tell me about yourself.
02. What motivates you to do a good job?
03. Why should I hire you instead of someone more qualified?
04. What is your biggest weakness?
05. Have you ever had a disagreement with your boss?
06. Why are you leaving your current job?
07. Tell me about your education and training.
08. Do you plan to continue your education?
09. What are your goals - where do you expect to be five years from now?
10. Are you at your best when working alone or in a group?
11. Describe your dream job.
12. Have you ever been fired from a job? Why?
13. How do you keep yourself organized?
14. What would your previous manager say about you?
15. What types of things irritate you about your coworkers?
16. Tell me about the worst boss you ever had.
17. Describe your ideal boss,
18. What types of things do your friends and family criticize or tease you about?
19. Why should I hire you?
20. Tell me about a really difficult problem you confronted with and how you solved it.I had some of these questions thrown at me multiple times so probably this may help you. This would help you prepare for these questions if they were to be asked and answer them on the fly rather than trying to come up with an answer on the spot. Another thing I've been taught is to learn about the company or business that way you will know more about the business and show that you are interested. Also, they will always ask if you have any questions at the end so probably try to have a few to show that you have done research which shows you are genuinely interested. About three questions at least. Be sure it is regarding the position and business/company. I, too, am seeking an IT Support job but just don't have any luck since I lack the experience. Anyways, good luck. RE: Job Interview! - Yaiba - 05-28-2017 Someone else probably gave you some detailed tips already. All I can say is be calm and pronounce your words as fluently as possible. If they see how passionate you are in the interview and you don't start wavering in certain questions they will be sure to accept you. Answer all the questions at just the right pace and think your answers through. Good luck with your interview and I wish you luck RE: Job Interview! - Byrdonawire - 05-28-2017 Ok I've been in the tech industry for 20 + years. And this being your first job they will be going soley off your educational background. Most of your first time tech positions will definitely be support so your A+ is a must if you don't have it have a plan in place to be getting it in the near future. A lot of your questions will be about cables and network troubleshooting. In reality you'll be called because people have locked themselves out of their email account or their company laptop or a file for a program has been corrupted and you will have to restore. You will deal with the public so as everyone has stated hygiene and people skills are a must no one what's to worry about the IT guy stocking them after work lol. Also a reminder although most hospital have migrated to Win 7 and 10 there will be some programs there that depend on XP to run there always is. Just be cool and you can sound confident but that is dependent on your skill level don't talk about things you know nothing about. These along with what everyone else has said and you'll be fine. And if you don't get the job there will be others. Don't get discouraged. Good luck to you!!!! |
