When I had my Linux box up and running, I was much the same as yourself- I didn't really like Ubuntu. Back then when BT was somewhat popular, I really enjoyed It. I'll state the obvious, was there enough ram allocated to the VM from the Host system? Even so, I still prefer a physical machine over a Virtual Machine.
