Differentiating Anime the term - Jiggly - 07-03-2016 So, it turns out that in Japan, the word "Anime" (or their version of) actually refers to all types of animation all around the world. It makes sense since it's short for animation and not specified. However, in English speaking cultures at least, "Anime" refers specifically to Japanese animation. Does anybody know if they have a word that differentiates the animation types that we refer to as Anime from the other animation types (like Disney for a cringey example)? Or do they just use the more general term "Anime" anyway? RE: Differentiating Anime the term - Despised - 07-03-2016 I think they just call it anime and everyone immediately picks it up as japanese animation because it's probably the most popular type of animation over there. I am not completely sure however as I haven't heard any other terms for it yet. RE: Differentiating Anime the term - insidious - 07-04-2016 I think long story short the distinction between what we call 'Anime' and just any ol' animation isn't really made in Japan outright. They may refer to it by a number of different things. I just read this Kotaku article on it. Still a bit confusing after reading the article, but it seems they don't have any one word to mean the Japanese style of animation, but instead refer to it in a more specific sense, IE: Ghibli Anime, Manga TV Series, etc. From the Article: Quote:That’s both the beauty and the problem with the word anime. It has different meanings to different people. It’s shorthand. It’s loaded. Is there a way around that? Maybe, yeah. Qualifiers help explain what exactly you’re talking about. “Television anime.” “Disney anime.” “American anime.” Whatever. I can actually think of other things in life that I refer to by a more specific grouping rather than the word that represents all of it. RE: Differentiating Anime the term - Oni - 07-18-2016 If someone says "anime", I think of Japanese animation. People don't normally use the word to refer to American cartoons. RE: Differentiating Anime the term - pvnk - 07-18-2016 What an elitist. You call Disney animation cringey, yet... RE: Differentiating Anime the term - Losi - 07-18-2016 Didn't know it was such a broad term in Japan. I always think of anime as in AoT or Naruto not Calliou lol.
