Google's Modular Smart Phone - Dean Winchester - 05-21-2016

Has anyone had a look into it so far? A guy I know, nearby supposed is going to a Developer edition and it looks great so far.

The lowest spec model should cost around $50 with decent affordable hardware. I'm still excited about it. I think it should change the budget smartphone level segment.

Opinions?

I discussed the possibility of companies doing this with a friend a year ago. It's neat that Google is doing it.

I honestly though they abandoned this; I always thought phonebloks was gonna do it but they only brought the idea to attention; I'm a fucking idiot.

Aria shows promise, but I can see some of the half decent parts becoming as expensive as phones currently are.

The companies manufacturing the parts are lg, Sony, Samsung and Panasonic.

I think this is going to be pretty cool when it comes out.

I feel like it has a pretty great potential of being abused, though.

I hate being forced into 'proprietary' hardware by companies...Apple is a great example of this kind of mentality.
And with all this modular stuff coming out, i'm sure there's going to be alot of that going around.

Hopefully smaller companies like Phonebloks lead the way and support more modabilty/parts/cater to hobbyists, which means the niche isn't totally doomed.

Either way, I think modular phones are pretty fuckin' sweet

Probably like any other guy I hate being forced into 'proprietary' hardware by companies *cough* apple *cough*.

Hadn't seen this until now, but this looks just like the 'phonebloks' idea from 2013

Project Ara is bad, the idea is great, but how they do is just plain sucks.
