About Dutchy's Ban - ɘxɘ - 10-01-2015

So from what I understand @Dutchy was banned for what? Using auto-refresh? Okay, so why is this bad? He gets a lot of online time? I mean honestly I wouldn't give a fuck if someone did that. Honestly that is a good idea to me, lets users know they can send me messages. They might be hesitant if they think I'm away, which I might be, but it lets me get to it asap. Honestly, if I understand correctly, @Dutchy has no reason to be banned. Lastly, @Man do you stalk @Dutchy? Do you spend every seconds of your online time just staring at his/her last visit? I mean really, if he wants to use auto-refresh to stay online, let him/her. I mean, I leave my laptop over night sometimes, and what if I am using auto-refresh for something else totally unrelated to RF? What if @Dutchy was makin' bank off the Alexa Master method? Because every now and then there will have to be a refresh to keep it going because the browser will crash, I know, I've done it.

Wastes the servers resources. Why would you want to auto refresh anyways?

I would give him a slight warning not to do it again, only in case he didn't actually know :yus:

Okay, so the size of the home page is how many kb? Way less than a 100, I know that. And how many kb are in a mb? Oh 1024? So let's say the size of the home page is 25kb and he/she refreshes every 10 seconds. So if he/she refreshed 6 times/minute then he/she uses 150kb per minute. Let's take 1024 and divide it by 150, which is exactly 6.82666667, but we will just round that up to 7. So it would take ~7 minutes for he/she to use 1, just 1, megabyte of bandwidth. That doesn't even begin to get close to a gigabyte, which this server has probably a terabyte of bandwidth/month. (1000gigabyte = 1terabyte) So let's see how long it would take to get to a gigabyte, shall we? So we know that about every 7 minutes he/she uses 1 megabyte of bandwidth. So, if we do 1000/7 which is 142.857142857 minutes, but we will round that to 143 minutes. That is roughly 2.4 hours. So a gigabyte each 2.4 hours, 24 hours a day. So 10 gigabyte/day when running 24 hours day. Now lets see how much a week. A week is 7 days, so 70 gigabyte/week. There are roughly 4 weeks in a month, so he/she uses ~280gb/month. So about 0.28terabytes/month of bandwidth, and I highly doubt @Dutchy runs the bot 24/7 so he/she probably uses ~220gb/month or 0.22terabytes/month. I am sure we won't get bandwidth capped off the other visitors if @Dutchy does this.

As well, if you think the him refreshing and running queries is going to use all the VPSes RAM. Then this is for you:
:fp:
Because the PHP and MySQL queries probably take up LESS than 100mb of RAM per request. The thing that probably uses the most RAM is the Apache and MySQL servers, not the request going to them, just the overhead of running them.

Exactly, not a ban.

The fact you did all of that math, the fact is he was abusing and wasting resources period.

Someone on Leak Forums got banned for a few months for doing this and are you entirely sure it was for using an auto-refresh thing?

RE: About Dutchy's Ban - Ami - 10-01-2015

Calm down, it's only for 2 days.
It was wasting server resources (it doesn't matter how little), nor was it fair on other members.

RE: About Dutchy's Ban - Quanity - 10-01-2015

auto refresh every 10 seconds is really useless. an hours or 2. isnt a problem though.

how was it not fair?

and so fucking what it if was wasting server resources? It's not like we are downloading a 2.78GB ISO of Windows here.

still doesn't deserve a ban
