Yogurt Making - roger_smith - 05-25-2015 We go through a lot of dairy product in our household. My girlfriend tends to take yogurt for lunch every day, and at a buck a piece, that gets a little pricey. I decided to try a bit of an experiment today. Last time we went to the grocery store I picked up a single serve cup of plain greek yogurt. Today, I put about half a gallon of milk in a dutch oven, heated it to about 200*F, cooled it to about 112*F, then inoculated the milk using the yogurt. Since the yogurt I bought has live cultures in it, the milk has been slowly turning to yogurt over the last 8 hours. So now, for the cost of a yogurt cup and half a gallon of milk, we have a fairly significant amount of yogurt. Add some strawberry jam (home made of course) and you have strawberry yogurt. Once it's completely finished and cooled I'll let you know how it is. The cool part is I can just use more of the stuff I made to inoculate a new batch. RE: Yogurt Making - ねこまっしぐら - 05-25-2015 This sounds nice. When you're done cooking it up, you should make an update thread that includes detailed pictures of what's going on. RE: Yogurt Making - OversouL - 05-25-2015 This sounds economical, just make sure it wont give you a bad tummy ache. XD If it's good maybe you can try and sell it too. On a serious note, many years ago I had a yogurt maker that made It extremely well. It was a "set and forget" type machine, whereby the process was almost entirely automated. @roger_smith, making It the way you've described beats the yogurt maker. I've known people to make It without the aid of a machine, and It tastes heaps better. RE: Yogurt Making - roger_smith - 05-25-2015 I'll post some pics and more info later on today. I just had some of the final product and it's actually really good. It got even better after sitting in the fridge. I had it with some homemade strawberry jam in it, and also tried a bit with homemade vanilla extract, and both were really good. That added vanilla sounds like another good home made diarrhea yogurt. jk. So any bad side to what you have experienced so far? I made it the same way our great grandparents would have (technique wise) and it came out pretty great. Far better than my lunch (lol fast food) RE: Yogurt Making - OversouL - 05-26-2015 (05-25-2015, 08:46 PM)roger_smith Wrote: nope, it's just standard yogurt at this point. I'm kinda curious.
