Just got fired - SpainAmbassador - 04-07-2022

Sorry guys, I just need to vent a little bit .

I was 6 months into an internship at a solar power company, and I asked for a raise.
They did give me a raise, which was great.
Today, a month later, I was told that I was being fired because I'm just not profitable for the company. It's cheaper for them to hire another intern willing to do the same job I do for less money.

So that kinda sucks. Tomorrow is my last day.

Ridiculous.

They gave you a pay rise, and then fired you because of their very own decision to agree to the raise? Check If there's an unfair dismissal department (or a similar variant) In your locality, and see what they have to say.

Thanks for the support.

Unfortunately, as interns, we barely have any rights when it comes to labor. We are disposable and replaceable.

Things would be different if I was an actual engineer, but I'm still struggling to finish my degree.

I will look into unfair dismissal, but at the same time I want to end it in good terms with them so that I can get recommendation letters, if necessary in the future.

Now that I don't have a job, I'll be focusing on my studies, so that I can finish and get a proper contract.

You're welcome.

I hope your studies lead to a fulfilling/satisfying career.

I'd be too up in arms about it, I'll take it you're a social engineer, I personally would keep some type of "insurance", and I know I'll get a lot of shit for keeping a machiavellian ideation, but at the end of the day your income is quite literally your means of survival.

Or at least thats how I look at it, if you get fucked, everyone gets fucked.

I'm glad you've got a good outlook in focusing on your studies.

That must have been extremely frustrating. I think that's extremely poor business management for them to have such a quick turnaround from approving a raise to firing someone over affordability. It may be that you've dodged a bullet as well. Companies that raise/fire people that easily can be quite volatile to work for.

It was a small company, yes.

The good thing about it is that I learned a lot during my time working there.

That being said, next time I'm applying to big companies only. I already have the experience and the knowledge, so I'm aiming for stability.

I think that's technically a gray area, legally speaking.

Agreed. Seems like poor management overall, if they go from approving a raise to immediately firing you. At the very least you'd expect them to renegotiate terms or offer alternatives. Chances are they'll make equally bad decisions when it comes to other aspects of the company.

Good way to get blackballed, if you do that often enough. Much better to leave on amiable terms, with the chance of a reference.
