Oil Industry Threatened by Corona - Oni - 08-04-2020 2020 has been a pretty awful year for friends in the oil industry. Only worsened by Corona, as less people are travelling (and consuming oil). Quote:It’s never been a worse time to be an oil company. Even the biggest of Big Oil firms are falling apart like shoddily built McMansions on a patch of quicksand. The oil Industry has made enough profit over the years, so this loss Is somewhat minimal. I don't think this will be the end of those companies in any way. Especially as people are beginning to come out of lockdown and once vaccines are available... It may be business as usual. They will make a comeback. However, the more local and personal impacts (those who lost their jobs), suppliers and subcontractors could see some permanent damage. I am curious how this crisis will impact the oil-industry in the long run. Will environmental advocates have more ground to stand on/evidence to provide when pushing for legislation and policy change? Before, the impacts of the global use of oil were frequently argued... Now we have outright proof of how quickly changes can occur when we suddenly stop polluting. It's going to be interesting to see what happens next. Those companies operate on a very large scale with billions of dollars to spare, so unless the COVID-19 situation lasts for a number of years, I believe they will stay afloat. There's going to be massive demand when people are able to travel again as well. RE: Oil Industry Threatened by Corona - doperdoped - 10-09-2020 Few benefits of Covid virus certainly. They pollute the environment way too much. It causes way too much premature deaths than even corona RE: Oil Industry Threatened by Corona - stewiethesmoke - 10-09-2020 Oil stocks have not been Pog RE: Oil Industry Threatened by Corona - darkone - 10-09-2020 Just lost my job in the Oil & Gas sector. Many of these companies are more worried about profit margins than their employees, and they did nothing to prep for an oil price drop, they just keep acquiring more debt and acting like the price could only go up. Many of these companies are filing for Chapter11 if they aren't sitting on a lot of cash. I hope you find new, and more rewarding work. I also lost my job, but I was doing a small role with a company in the leisure industry. Do you think their profit margins are being focused on due to shareholder pressure, or are they just asshats? xD |
