How does amazon keep track of returned items? - db8803 - 02-10-2019

Hi, guys! Something very strange happened to my roommate lately. We are SEing together for 3-4 years now. One month ago he returned one SSD to Amzon after he opened the box without breaking the seals and replaced the SSD with something with the same weight. He closed the box and sent it back to them. One week later he got the refund - by the book. And yesterday like one month after he got the refund, he received an email from them, that he will be charged again for this order, because he returned wrong item. Not only this, but he did that before a couple of time for period of 1 year. Later the same day he gets another email from their buyers@return that an order from 7 months also contained "junk" as they say. They did not charged him for the 7 month old order, but it's extremely strange. Do you think they keep track of SSD's somehow? Like serial numbers?

Just out of interest, how and why did you not break Amazon packing tape seal on the box? Surely you would have to have opened the box to have discovered to wrong item in it.

Of course he opened the Amazon packaging. I am talking about the item's box the SSD. He replaced the SSD inside it's original packaging without breaking the seals. After that he repacked it and made it look like it was never touched.

It's becoming pretty known that Amazon has been stepping up against SE attempts. It could be part of a new policy to actually physically check the returned items now, especially if they're over a certain value.

Were the items shipped and sold by amazon, or otherwise? I had one attempted SE where the item was listed by another party, but fulfilled by amazon. Used the same method you did and returned something else. I received my refund, but about a week later I looked and my card had been charged again. I know when items are returned the seller is given the option to either have the items restocked or they dump them into their "donation/3rd party sites bin". My guess is they went to restock it, so they checked to see if the product was still working so it could be sold again. Hence opening and seeing it was the wrong item.

Shipping isn't cheap even for Amazon. If they didn't check their returns I would guess a lot more buyers would be receiving the wrong packages. Cost to ship to buyer + covering buyers cost of returning is probably much more than just paying a few employees to physically check higher-valued returned items that plan to be relisted.

The email from 7 months ago is odd, but the fact that he's actively SEing on the same account as he did 7 months ago is his own mistake. They may have flagged his account from that previous order, but didn't escalate it at the time. It happened again, so they now know it wasn't a mistake.

I read this article a week or two ago. It mentions a few things I highlighted on. If you'd like to do some more research into their internal returns policy, I'd start there and then look into some of the companies they mentioned and/or actual sellers on Amazon.

I can imagine that. But I mean, they scan the ASIN of the item, which is the same for the hole batch of same items, you can see the ASIN of the item if you open your Invoice for the order. But do they actually keep track of the serial numbers? For some items probably they do, but I think you should see it in your order summery, as when you order a phone you see the IMEI listed in the order.

Internally, they do keep record of every dispatched Item and everything associated with It.

Whether they utilize the Information accordingly, Is a different story. At times they're Inundated with claims, and simply do not have the manpower to handle the Influx of requests.

Does this mean, that if I take out the SSD from it's box without breaking any seals and the packaging looks untouched. After that I return it to Amazon. And they sell it to another person. When he claims that he got empty box or maybe something else inside the original box of the SSD, they can connect this particular SSD with me? This sounds very unlikely. I have worked in Amazon before and I know for a fact, that when they receive items from the manufacturer and they put them in their system, they don't scan the serial numbers, only the ASIN. Except for some items for which they are required to scan the SN. Maybe I am wrong, but i'd like to think i am right hah Smile

Tracking number, Order ID, and whatever asset identifier is contained in the return label which arrives at their packaging center. It's not strange.

And stll..how will they connect this particular SSD with me? I mean if they resell it after my return. Because they get from the manufacturer pallets with goods with the same ASIN all of them. And when this item is shipped they only scan the asin, not the SN. I don‘t think it‘s possible to connect this item with me if it was reselled.
