Because your using a virtual machine, vm software uses a bridge to connect the virtual machine to the internet and as such always shows up and acts as a wired connection

type 'ifconfig wlan0 up' on your tertminal.this will start the wlan0 mode

You should also try to run ifconfig -a to give you a look at all your interfaces. When you type ifconfig wlan0 up, try to assign an IP by using dhclient wlan0.
