just heard from some good SEers its not easy.
Let me know if it works.
Get your package, send them an empty box. IMO most big companies just scan the package, letting the system know that it has arrived, and they put it aside with the 100s of other boxes waiting to be opened. By the time they open it, your replacement has been dispatched. If they ask you about the empty box, be adamant that you put it into the box.
ive done an apple SE before, they check inside the box.

So have I.
I've only had them question after they have already sent me a replacement and I have either sold it, or in the process of selling it. I believe they do have a way to block imei's or something similar, as I've had a few people from craigslist asking why their phone wont accept their SIM card. Had this same thing happen with pixel and asus, except instead of blocking sim's, they unregister the IMEI, or leave it unregistered until they 1. Receive your package or 2. Figure out why they got a rock instead of an iPhone (or you convince them otherwise).
Anyone here correct me if im wrong about them blocking IMEIs.

What does it mean when they “block the IMEI”? Does it mean that they like brick the phone or that they just stop SIM cards working on it?

In simple terms, the device cannot be activated with a given carrier, hence cannot use their network to send/receive calls nor utilize any data.
Depending on the carrier service, emergency calls (example: 911) may be permitted.
