I would consider a return a fail but yes without a PR you can still return it. Your excuse could be that a family member took it out without your knowledge and only just gave it back to you or some other BS.

I hope someone more experienced will correct me if wrong here but you should be fine just returning through the bot like normal. To be extra safe you could speak to someone in the chat and say something like 'I know I was in contact with you recently about receiving an empty box but now I want to return the item because .... [insert story of how you found it here]'
