As far as I know, the only thing people are concerned about is Apple blacklisting the IMEI. Even that, I'm fairly certain that only service providers/carriers actually blacklist by IMEI but some people do claim Apple does it.

I've never heard of them remotely bricking phones before for any reason.

You are able to jailbreak and iPhone and change the IMEI that way.

Apparently it is out, though I haven't personally tried it up to now. Do your research on Google before attempting anything.
If things go wrong, you can buy a new iPhone motherboard online and replace it, effectively removing links to the past "device".
Do you prefer to be Notorious or simply forgotten?

The IMEI number Is dedicated to the device It's assigned to, hence spoofing/changing It may be rejected by the carrier during the activation process.

That said, there Is a workaround. The first 8 digits of the IMEI number known as the TAC (Type Allocation Code) Is what Identifies the model & device manufacturer. When changing It, leave those digits as Is and spoof the rest. As such, the IMEI number will show up to It's corresponding device when activating.
