Wondering if anyone can assist me in installing Ubuntu? #1
So I figured I'd try out Linux, and I was reading that Ubuntu is considered Linux on training wheels so I decided it'd be perfect for me. So when I tried to install it from my USB on the boot menu, I open up the install screen and I clicked on install Ubuntu, and immediately afterwards the screen went completely blank with a gray background with a white flashing bar in the top left that looks like the text marker in command prompt. I then decided to try running Ubuntu without installing it and I got the same error. The only option I can select on the menu without the blank screen is Advanced Settings, and when I go into advanced settings there is nothing in the box except an option that says back. I looked around on Google and all I can find are people talking about the black screen of death and when I first tried installing Ubuntu I experienced that but I fixed that and it was from booting the UEFI version of my USB stick. If a picture can help I can easily get one for you guys. Also I am currently trying to install Ubuntu 14.04.1.

Thanks!

I can help you out bud, we can even skype if need be or whatever.
I am running 14.04 now, and most problems with the install freezing is either you have secureboot on or the image is a little out of date.
For some reason Only the newest images load with ubuntu.
So burn a completely new image to disc and try it that way. (after making sure secureboot is off)

Before trying to turn off secure boot (because I don't really want to restart), I downloaded the image right off of Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/) and selected 64 Bit. Is there a different place I should download from? Because this seems like the legit download.

It is the legit file, just make sure that it is the absolute newest image.
If you downloaded the image today or even in the past couple days I would just disable secureboot and try again.
If the image is a week or older I would definitely make sure its the newest.

Yeah I just downloaded it last night so I don't think it's outdated. Anyways I'll just try disabling secure boot and see if it works. Thanks!

I tried what Blunt suggested but it still didn't seem to fix it, so I just loaded up my USB with Windows 10 because I got bored after like the 3 hour mark.

If the system you're using has EFI type BIOS, you may need to try setting a "legacy mode" option.

This Ask Ubuntu post has some clarification on the subject

http://askubuntu.com/questions/446968/le...-uefi-help

This ubuntu help doc talks more about EFI and installing Ubuntu

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

This person was able to resolve their booting issue by making sure they had the 64bit version

Hope some of this helps. Let us know what happens and we'll go from there.

I have UEFI, but I assume they're the same thing.

In the second link I found

"Having a PC with EFI firmware does not mean that you need to install Ubuntu in EFI mode. What is important is below:

if the other systems (Windows Vista/7/8, GNU/Linux...) of your computer are installed in EFI mode, then you must install Ubuntu in EFI mode too."

My copy of Windows 7 was installed with UEFI mode sooo....
