Why sleep is important 03-03-2013, 12:06 AM

There are five stages of sleep, I will only go over the fifth stages, as the other four are relatively unimportant.
And are really just transitional phases to get to the fifth.
Now the fifth stage is called rem cycle.
Rem is short for rapid eye movement.
It's the stage in which memories of the day are recorded.
It only lasts for a short burst of time, but occurs multiple times throughout sleep.
Many psychologists also link it to that of defragmenting a computers hard drive.
Because it also sorts out your memories in the proper sections of the brain.
During this stage of sleep your dreams are that of what transpired earlier in the day, but in a weird way.
For instance, you might have seen a cat walk down the road, but in your dream you see a cat on a unicycle.
It's called rapid eye movement because during this stage you'll see the persons eyes moving rapidly (eye lids open but asleep.)
So to conclude this, sleep is important, with out it you can't retain the information from the day.
