i think the essential should be phone, wallet (with some cash), keys, a pen, and a powerful whistle, you may never know when you could be in danger and need something to signal that you need help. i would have suggestedd a weapon but the thing is, you can get arrested for carryinng or usinng a knife even tho it is in the name of self defense

Should you bring a tiny notepad for that pen? Personally think a whistle is useless, you can just yell. I think a small "weapon" could be better like one of those keychains with a sharp end to stab with.
