Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, the features you require, and other factors.

THere are some pentesting linux distros:
1) Backtrack
2) Backbox
3) Gnacktrack
4) Blackbuntu
5) DarkRacer etc etc.

Most popular one is BackTrack. I have used BackBox, Backtrack, Gnacktrack and Blackbuntu, all of them more or less give you with same functionality. I prefer BackTrack and BackBox.
YEAH YEAH.. GIVE ME NEGATIVE REP FOR SAYING TRUTH... BUT ANYWAY WHO CARES!!!. I AM WHO I AM...REPS DO NOT MATTER TO ME.. GIVE ME 1000 -ve REPS, but IF MY POST IS GOOD THEN READERS WILL KNOW

There is no definitive software tool that is better than any other. I use aircrack-ng for WiFi before anything else, but aircrack won't do you much good to try to brute force a system account. Every tool has their own purposes and usage scenarios.

The question which tool is the best is very objective. There is no definitive authority that judges which tool is better for a specific purpose.

I tend to prefer applications I write myself over others available because I write them for the exact purpose and usage case that I am comfortable with. That being said the best piece of software for what you are trying to do is normally designed to do what you are trying to do.

In a broader scope than what I believe the OP had in mind... The machine you are using, your method of connectivity, these are definitely up there because if your machine can't run the right application the application won't do you any good anyhow. Overall, one's own mind is hands down the definitive best tool one can use in any situation. This applies to all levels of software, hardware, social, etc... If you don't have the knowledge or the willingness to learn, you won't get very far at all.

Well Backtrack is made specifically for penetration testing and has plenty of tools but it's really more about how you use them.
