Someone here suggested Runescape (private servers) as a means of learning Java, and I completely agree. Despite the fact that the majority of code inside most of the Runescape bases is bad, it can still serve as a great way to get your feet wet in the programming world.

It can also serve as a potential source of income for those willing to put some time into developing a server. You'll be surprised how far ahead you can get by just being familiar with the RSPS framework and actually knowing Java.
