booting up other OS's in VMs take forever  on my current system build.

If I may ask, what VM are you using and what's the specs on the Host (physical) system on which the VM Is running on?

I'm using VMware Fusion and i use kali , ubuntu, centOS on it and they all seem to lag

The specs of the laptop i use it are:
2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
APPLE HDD ST750LM022 750 gb ( i will be upgrading to an SSD soon)
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
on macOS Sierra

I am personaly in LOVE with Parrot Security OS although I miss that Conky is not working on it anymore but it has some great features and comes with most of what you would need although not sure about Diablo though!

If you don't want to use Ubuntu as your main system, you probably won't want to use any other Linux system.  That pretty much leaves Windows...

For the stuff you're doing (school work, light programming, and gaming ), all the Linux's will be pretty much the same except for looks.

Or he could dualboot Windows & Linux.

Conky is essentialy a system monitor for the linux desktops that you can use to monitor things like system performance and the temp of the motherboard and storage space etc but it is also highly custom so you can create your own themes and stuff which I love, unfortunatly it doesnt really work well with the Parrot Security OS at the moment though.

If you're running simultaneous VMs, I can understand, but solely one VM with your current specs should function without any Issues whatsoever. That's provided there's no other resource-hungry applications active. How much memory have you allocated to the VM?

Not just that, but how else are your vm's configured? allocated or dynamic hdd? what video memory are you dedicating to them? what else is running? etc etc etc
