Yeah 8GB is definitely not enough, even without a VM it can easily be the bottleneck for heavy loads.
On my Windows desktop, with normal use (firefox, a torrent client and an irc client) I usually have more than 6GB of ram used.

Agree.

I'm not running a VM at the moment, and I've almost hit 8 GB.
