How to SSH Tunnel FireFox 12-07-2015, 12:04 PM

So SSH Tunneling is relatively easy.
SSH Tunneling is the act of filtering all data through a secure server, sort of like a VPN but more personal.
An example would be sometimes I need to access my fav torrent site but my ISP blocks it so I SSH tunnel into my university and this allows me to access the website, the benefits of this is that only the browser is tunneled and so it doesn't affect any other program running.
So what do you need?
1. A SSH client (PuTTy) or SSH enabled console (standard on *nix systems)
2A. For the SSH Console you just type "ssh username@localhost -DXXXX". Obviously replace the username and local host with the relevant username and hostname. Replace the XXXX's with something like 1234 (So now it should look similar to this "ssh megan@Sinister.ly -D666"
2B. For PuTTy - Open up PuTTy - tick the drop down button for connection then drop down SSH - Then choose tunnels in "Source Port" type the random number you want to SSH tunnel with - select "Dynamic" from the radio buttons and then login to the server as per usual via the session tab.
3. Open up Firefox - Open up prefrences/options - select advanced - select network - settings - click the radio button that says "manual proxy configuration" - choose SOCKS HOST and type in the box right of it "127.0.0.1" and then the box right of that the number you typed so for me assuming I used this command to SSH Tunnel "ssh megan@Sinister.ly -D666" I would type 666 in to that box - Press "OK" and done, you have now SSH tunneled!
