Suggestion to all windows 8 users #1
I thought I would mention this to anyone that is using windows 8 and you may already be aware of this and it may not be on all installations of windows 8.

Just to give you a recap, about 3 months ago I got my wife a new sony laptop with windows 8 for her work.. I got everything updated and all her software that she has to have installed and everything was running great until the next day, there was an update for some vaio software so I installed it. 10 min later it finished and rebooted and would never boot back into windows it apparently corrupted some major windows files.. so I decided to boot into good old safe mode to at lease let me deactivate the $6000 dollar software she uses for production.. and guess what.. apparently by default Microsoft has safe mode disabled in windows 8.. Now i'm not a genius but it seems really dumb to me to have your "safe mode" disabled in the case that there is an issue then only to find out that you have to enable it before there is an issue. (Think Microsoft.. Think!)

With that being said I found a site that gives you the steps and the command to enable it.. just thought I would pass it along..

happy hunting.

NOTE: ( This may be only disabled with that specific laptop, you may want to try it out before you go through the steps to fix it if its not broke. )

Lol, i had a windows 8 system from my mom that she got from work, it was terribly installed it didn't have word and excel or any AV etc....
I wanted to install Windows 7 and plugged in the CD, after i chose the settings it told me it didn't have acces to the hdd to install (wtf??)...
So i want to the bios, saw my hdd was 'frozen' and i tried booting W8 as usual and it wouldn't boot, it told me that windows couldn't repair itself and that i could try and do it manually.
So i did i want in and tried all the (6?) options and none worked. They all required acces to the hdd to run but it wouldn't unlock it so i had to remove all 6 partions(some with valuable files) because the format in wich it was formatted wouldn't allow any change to it. I then removed all the partions and installed a clean windows 7 os because it was all fucked. Now it runs perfectly but wtf was windows 8 doing with my pc it wouldn't boot because it froze itself for no apparent reason, i hated W8 and now i do even more.
I conclude windows 8 is the worst desktop os, even worse then Vista, certainly when you want to configure anything on the system.
This is what defines many, yet many are not understood by much.

I agree.. I'm really not linking the direction that Microsoft is going.. I run a couple of boxes at home one with 8,five machines with 7 and my laptop for trying to learn Linux..

Right now i'm fighting backtrack.. I cant get the damn thing to install I get the boot up the command prompt and type startx then nothing... I really would love to get good at Linux.. I've tried it off and on for years but cant ever get it to stick .. any other suggestions besides backtrack?

Backtrack is horrible for beginners as it requires users to configure a lot of things to get everything working, instead try Ubuntu or debian if you like a bit of a challenge try fedora, which is my personal favourite, it's fairly easy to install and configure but can throw a tantrum now and again

Thanks chmod.. I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04.. I'm going to try to get better at using it.. but I did have a question (Tried to send you a PM but it wont let me until I have at least 5 post) What programs do you recommend for testing under Ubuntu. I would like to try my hand at trying to hack my WiFi at home and see it it will break my key,

any suggestions or advice would great.

Ubuntu will happily run both aircrack-ng and reaver which will allow you to perform WiFi attacks just bear in mind that not all hardware is supported so check the vendors website for compatibility

I apologize for the late reply you should @ mention people or quote them if you want a direct reply from them and they will then receive an alert

No worries man.. I appreciate the response all the same.. I figured you had been busy and would respond when you could.. I played around with Linux Mint this weekend.. I like it.. still a toss up between it and Ubuntu.. I really need to get comfortable with using terminal.. I have a dedicated laptop i'm going to use for my security stuff but found out that net stumbler doesn't like my wireless card..

I agree.. unfortunately the production software they use require windows.. but its all good now.. we got it straight and turned on the safe mode option and did a image of the drive.. just in case.

Well I'm currently stuck with Ubuntu due to some hardware incompatibility otherwise I would have been using Fedora as @chmod suggested it to me. I'm facing quite a hassle with Ubuntu. One of the freaking problem is when I'm doing work on Firefox suddenly the CPU usage will max and the session simply restarts, I've been searching for the problem but I'm afraid I've not got even close to it.
