I'd recommend these as some good starters and must-watches.
Darker Anime: Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul. (These "darker animes" are in my opinion absolute must-watches, highly recommend.)
Lighter Anime: Fairy Tail, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Bungou Stray Dogs, Bleach, and Assassination Classroom. (Assassination Classroom is mostly a comedy anime)
From these animes I'll list my personal opinion for must watching is order, greatest to least favorite. Tokyo Ghoul, Death Note, Bungou Stray Dogs, One Piece, Fairy Tail, Hunter x Hunter, Assassination Classroom, and Bleach.
Fairy Tail is a very good anime, escpeccially for a starter one. One Piece is like Fairy Tail in the aspect it is a very good starter anime, good action overall great. Hunter x Hunter is good but I can't say much as I haven't watch a lot of it. Assassination Classroom is a good anime if your board and want something really silly to watch. Bleach is ok, a LOT of fillers. Death Note is built on suspence, virtually no action. Death Note is almost one of a kind. Tokyo Ghoul I also find a must watch as it has a really good plot, action and everything overall.

Fairy Tale: The fictional world of Earth-land (アースランド Āsu Rando?) is populated by wizards who coalesce into guilds to hone their magical abilities and apply them to paid job requests. Seventeen-year-old wizard Lucy Heartfilia runs away from home to join Fairy Tail, a wizards' guild famous for its members' overly destructive antics. She is invited into the guild by Natsu Dragneel, a wizard with dragon-like abilities who travels the kingdom of Fiore (フィオーレ王国 Fiōre Ōkoku) in search of his missing foster father, the dragon Igneel. Natsu forms a team with his cat-like companion Happy and Lucy, later to be joined by ice wizard Gray Fullbuster and armored wizard Erza Scarlet. The five embark on numerous guild missions, which include subjugating criminals, illegal dark guilds, and ancient Etherious (エーテリアス Ēteriasu) demons created by the dark wizard Zeref.
One Piece: The world of One Piece is populated by humans and numerous other races such as "fishmen" (a race of fish/human hybrid, similar to mermen and mermaids), Minkmen (a race of humanoid animals), and giants. It is covered by two vast oceans, which are divided by a massive mountain range called the Red Line (赤い土の大陸 Reddo Rain?), which is also the only continent in the world.[2] The Grand Line
Hunter x Hunnter: The story follows a young boy named Gon Freecss who was told all his life that both his parents were dead, but when he learns from Kite, an apprentice of his father, Ging Freecss that he is still alive and has since become an accomplished Hunter, Gon leaves his home on Whale Island (くじら島 Kujira Shima?) and take the Hunter Examination (ハンター試験 Hantā Shiken?) in order to become a Hunter like him.[2][3][4] During the exam, Gon meets and eventually befriends three of the other applicants: Kurapika, the last remaining member of the Kurta clan who wishes to become a Hunter in order to avenge his clan and recover their scarlet-glowing eyes, plucked from their corpses by a band of thieves known as the Phantom Troupe; Leorio, a prospective physician who, in order to pay for medical school, desires the financial benefits Hunters receive; and Killua Zoldyck, another twelve-year-old boy who has left his former life as a member of the world's most notorious assassin family.[3][4][5] Among many other examinees, Gon continuously encounters Hisoka, a mysterious and deadly transmuter who takes an interest in him.
Bungou Stray Dogs: The story of Bungo Stray Dogs centers around individuals who are gifted with super natural powers and use them for different purposes including holding a business, solving mysteries, and carrying out missions assigned by the mafia. The story mainly follows the members of the "Armed Detective Agency" and their everyday lives.
Bleach: The anime adaptation of Bleach follows the story of the manga, although introducing several original storylines. In Karakura Town, Ichigo Kurosaki becomes a substitute Soul Reaper, when Rukia Kuchiki cannot fulfill her duties after engaging in battle with a particularly powerful Hollow. He later discovers several of his friends and classmates are spiritually aware and have powers of their own: Uryū Ishida is a Quincy, Orihime Inoue possesses a group of protective spirits known as the Shun Shun Rikka and Yasutora Sado ("Chad") has strength equal to the Hollows, later defined as being a Fullbringer. When Rukia is sentenced to death for her transgressions in the human world and taken back to the spirit world of Soul Society, Ichigo seeks out the assistance of Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihōin, unbeknownst to him as being two exiled Soul Reapers, to allow himself and his friends to save Rukia
Assassination Classroom: The Earth is threatened by a powerful creature who destroyed 70% of the Moon with its power, rendering into the shape of a crescent moon forever. The creature claims that within a year, Earth will also be destroyed by him, but he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate. In class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, he starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students not only regular subjects, but the ways of assassination. The Japanese government promises a reward of ¥10 billion (i.e. 100 million USD) to whomever among the students succeeds in killing the teacher, whom they have named "Koro Sensei" (殺せんせー Korosensē?, a pun on korosenai (殺せない, unkillable) and sensei (先生, teacher)). However, this has proven to be an almost impossible task, as not only does he have several superpowers at his disposal, including the capacity of moving at Mach 20, but he is also the best teacher they've ever had, helping them not only to improve their grades, but also their individual skills and perspectives for the future.
Death Note: Light Yagami is a genius high schooler who discovers the "Death Note", a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it. After experimenting with the notebook, Light meets the Shinigami Ryuk, the notebook's original owner, who dropped the notebook to the human world out of boredom. Light tells Ryuk of his plan to rule over a new world free from criminals as a god, where only people he deems morally fit to live remain. Light eventually becomes known to the public as Kira (キラ?), which is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "killer".
Tokyo Ghoul: Tokyo Ghoul is set in an alternate reality where ghouls, individuals who can only survive by eating human flesh, live among the normal humans in secret, hiding their true nature to evade pursuit from the authorities. Including enhanced speed, senses, and regenerative ability, a regular ghoul is several times stronger than a normal human, has a skin resistant to ordinary piercing weapons and have at least one special predatory organ called a "Kagune", which they can manifest and use as a weapon during combat. Another distinctive trait of a ghoul is that when they are excited the color of their sclera of both eyes turn black and their irises red, or in only one eye of these eyes undergoes the transformation, in the case of a half-ghoul. A half-ghoul can either be born naturally as a ghoul and a human's offspring, or artificially created by transplanting some ghoul organs into a human. In both cases, a half-ghoul is usually much stronger than a pure-blood ghoul. To hunt down the ghouls, several government-sponsored organizations around the world were created.
