Now let's sit down and talk about it. This new cpu needs a new socket. That means a whole new mobo. LGA 1150 (Broadwell and below) won't fit the new 1151 socket type. Bit of a bummer but there are some pros.

Pros:
Can support DDR4 ram
Can support more PCI lanes. (more hdds, ssds, etc.)
Better thermal hardware vs. last generation
FIVR (fully integrated voltage regulation) has been moved off cpu. Meaning cooler temps and possibly better OC'ing
Doesn't come with useless Intel heatsink

Cons:
Very small performance gain from Broadwell to Skylake (~5%)
New socket = new motherboard
Uses more power than previous gens
Same 14 nm architecture as 4770k and 4790k

Overall thoughts:
I would not recommend upgrading to Skylake if you have a cpu from the last three gens (Broadwell, Haswell, Ivy Bridge). If you have an i7 3770k, i7 4770k, or i7 4790k, I would not recommend upgrading. The price for this new socket just doesn't seem worth it. The performance is not worth upgrading.

Also, with such a small performance gain, is it reaaaally even worth the upgrade, unless your upgrading from a very old system to new with a new mobo anyways?

Honestly, there are very few circumstances where I'd recommend this over Haswell/Broadwell. The improvement of DDR3 to DDR4 is quite negligible, and how many people other than server operators are going to need that many PCIe Lanes? If I'm going to recommend anyone a processor for a build, I'll more than likely stick to suggesting Haswell processors.

Though I must say Skylake has some damn sexy boxes that'd look nice for any collection:

It's c+p'd right on lol. The real cpu has it's ID etched into the metal.

Ok that image I doubt is official. Because I don't think a company known for performance would put out a lowres pixely POS box art taken from what I'm assuming is the old template I used, given the box parts don't match up proper like how that one did, and has clear notches on the edges, along with off center and improperly aligned text.
