Take a disposable phone
If you take a laptop, make sure it doesn't run on an OS on the HDD, and have anything bootable off a flashdrive you can toss
Serious hackers go to those conventions, and they enjoy nothing more than getting into everything connecting to the network, and anything within range.
That's assumed. Unless you want to end up on the Wall of Sheep, of course.
A guy testing his new security app sat there with his phone and collected login data for several hundred, if not thousands of sites from people logging in to them while at defcon, all from his phone. Not to mention those who actually know what they're doing, and can exploit vulnerabilities in Windows to drop a payload off onto the system without anyone even noticing.
It's assumptions, but I'd rather be careful than a victim, regardless of what people think of me.
