I've recently found out about the concept of sim swapping but I'm not quite sure what goes on after you manage to swap sims.
So my idea of it is
1. Call a carrier
2. Using a victim's number, tell them your phone is broken or something and need to swap sims (?)
3. ???
What exactly do you do after swapping sims? How do you get a hold of accounts and such afterwards?
For "research purposes"

Well it's really easy,

Step 1: Swap the sims
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

haha I have no Idea never have heared of it. Why do you want to call the carrier in the first place?

Once you have someone's SIM card you will be able to receive/send texts on there behalf. You would easily be able to reset all of there social media passwords via SMS.

When you're not the account holder, It's not as simple as contacting the carrier and replacing the SIM card.

Generally speaking, for verification and authentication purposes, the carrier requires the full name, date of birth and (In some cases), the account number. The SIM card will either be posted to the residential/postal address on the account, or a "pick up slip" will be posted Instead- requesting the SIM card to be collected at the local post office. Proof of ownership may also be required thereafter.

And If the rightful account holder has generated a call/SMS when you've contacted the carrier, then obviously the SIM Is still In use, hence your plan has failed. Once you can formulate a method to circumvent all the above, then you can think of what to do with the SIM card (which Isn't too difficult at all).

Thanks, this helps. But I'm confused, you make it sound like it's an extremely difficult thing yet someone I know has a friend who is a part of a little community on twitter who all sim swap people constantly and manage to steal their OG accounts and bitcoins and almost none of them have been caught (except one idiot who changed all the emails to his own personal email lol.) From what it looks like to me, they appear to be sim swapping with just their victim's phone numbers and maybe some other basic info and the only way the victim can find out they've been sim swapped is losing cell service and knowing what sim swapping is.
