Should I learn Unity? #1
I've decided it's time to get off my ass and make a game, and I've been looking at Unity for my engine. It's free, ships with VS, and (from what I've heard) pretty easy. I've also heard quite a few negatives, and I'm not sure if the benefits outweigh them. Thoughts?

To be more explicit, I'm not making some triple-A FPS or the next League of Legends. I want to create a low-poly, maybe 8- or 16-bit arcade game to start off, so I don't want or need something like Unreal 4.

Unity is a great place to start with what you're hoping to achieve. Don't be fooled by the branding though. In a lot of ways, unity is a lot more powerful than UE. The reason UE was heralded as high quality for so long is it was the only accessible engine that could do PBR, but Unity has out of the box support for that these days. Sweeney was forced to make his UE engine free because of Unity.

It's good for what you're going for. League doesn't even run on Unity so I'm not sure why you brought that up.

But yeahz, it could he a big hit. You never know man.

Awww but UE4 is awesome, even if you are making something simple.

No but honestly if its super simple, and you can get over the dreaded "Made In Unity" splash, then Unity is probably fine for you. I moved over to UE4 for my game but progress slowed because of it so I'll probably go back.

Ehh, UE's lighting is more desirable if you know how to work with it.

I've played around with UE4 a bit, by default, in VR + FPV, the viewpoint is a bit too low.
Otherwise, UE4 is pretty good.

But, you said that you aren't looking for something like unity, and want to make something low end on the graphics side.

Unity should work fine. I haven't used it much, but it seems to be a great, multipurpose engine. It doesn't sound too hard to learn either. I'll prob. play around with it in the summer too.

Good luck!

Not ignoring anyone. There's obviously lots of people with an opinion on this topic, so I'd like to get as much input as possible before I formulate my own.

I have worked in 3 game engines before.

1) Unity, great all-round game engine with lost of possibilities. Lot's of content to learn from, a shitload of assets available.
2) Crytek engine, easy to use. Various options w/ great ability to design FPS games and maps/Areas
3) UE, great engine, loads of options for desiging/creating objects. Insane amount of options, biggest plus: doesn't cost any money to publish your game (only 5% of what you earn).

Actually Unity for beginner is best.
My start was with GameMaker I made two 2D games then I switch to Unity!
It's easy and clear for learning, If you know JavaScript so start with that language If not you can learn or start using C#.
If you want make a very night quality design so start with Unreal.
If you need help in unity, I have Discord server for unity users.
