Hi all, I currently have 6 servers in my house on a rack, only some are running. I have two PowerEdge 2950s running FreeNAS, one that holds all of my *ahem completely legitimate PAID IN FULL software/games so that I can access it from all the computers in the house (running on 8tb storage) and one running a mac backup as we have 3 different macs that get used constantly (running 8tb as well), I also have 2 PowerEdge r610 servers that are currently not running, they are truly powerhouses, but I can't figure out a good use for them, I was going to run a muilticraft Minecraft server on one, but the software doesn't load properly (still never resolved THAT issue) the only problem with them is that they only take 2.5" drives, Ideas would be appreciated. on top of those four servers, I have an hp ProLiant server (not sure what model, will update later) and a PowerEdge 2850 that doesn't power on, I decided to post this as currently, I don't have them all utilized, and also I feel like there are better alternative to FreeNAS, don't get me wrong, I love the setup and panel of it, but it feels slightly dated. please ask any questions you feel.

what do you want a server to do? what's the point? just to tinker, or are you trying to do something production?

Run a webserver. They're neat. Cool stuff to see in logs sometimes.

What's the problem w/ the 2.5in

I just don’t have many hard drives and I would rather use desktop ones as they are cheaper to get larger, faster drives. I have a single 120gb sad in one running windows server 2012, but it’s not hosting anything, I’m just wanting to try different things since it’s what I am wanting to do for a living, I figured the best way to learn about it is to just dive right in

My servers are in our attic, it has spray foam insulation so it's cooled with the rest of the house passively (no direct vents letting the cool air into the attic so mainly through doors to the inside of the house)

Why do you have so many servers lol. Did you just happen to obtain them from companies recycling old servers?

If you don't have a server running as your router already, you could set up an internet suite like Sophos UTM and dig around in that. Will give you lots of hands-on experience for the future.
