Sorry for hijacking your post but how is a S/N used in SE?

You'd use it when you contact the company and complain the product has a fault such as leaking or overheating. And they will ask for the S/N as proof, how you go about convincing them depends on the company and product of course.

Can't you give them the serial number of the actual product?
