I doubt you would find a paid host that would allow this, let alone a free one. Just too insecure in a shared environment.

You're getting into VPS territory here.

[coolshame]

thank Mr Evil Geoff, VPS is Public or Private for those php functions?

Im not entirely sure what you're asking... but a VPS generally gives you full access to an operating system so you can do as you please as far as configuration goes.

Dreamhost.com allows custom php.ini http://wiki.dreamhost.com/PHP.ini

Also supplies shell access which is nice so you can run say node.js(though it is against terms) on a non-privileged port.

I've never seen the custom php.ini anywhere else but I've not looked in recent years. I doubt you'd see that with free hosting though. But I suppose there might be some exceptions.

A. A large portion of that page is directed at VPS/Dedi only

B. Some access to create and use a php.ini does not mean the ability to modify safe mode, or enable functions such as exec(), which is the reason for his request.

A. Only the first section is VPS/Dedi the rest works with any hosting.

B. Safemode is off by default, but you can fully supply your own php.ini that willbe used. I'm not sure what if anything they block you from changing I've never run into any problems but I've mostly only used it to enable modules.

source: I have had hosting for many years.

I saw at least 2, maybe 3 headings that said VPS/dedi only... including some farther down the page...

And im not familiar with their operating environment - just saying that while they might allow you to create a php.ini with working values - they can restrict what values you put into that. So for example, if your account memory limit is 256mb ram, you cant put a memory limit of 1024mb, you cant enable certain extensions, modules, or specific funtions like system(), exec(), etc. Not saying that they block/allow either way... But merely suggesting you can create a php.ini does not necessarily mean that he has the same access or abilities as the system/global php.ini - Its really something he needs to confirm with support. But then again he might not be able to afford dreamhost any ways.
