Open-Source software (that is well licensed) is basically programmers giving back to their communities, and the world. There are plenty of people who get PAID to write open-source software. It's all about who is paying you, and what you are coding.

Anyhow, I have both open and closed sourced code, with reasons that vary for each. But in the end, I choose open-source most of the time.

I too like Open Source software and people who have Open Source Software usually get good amount of donations depending the quality of their software and the amount of help the code offers to the readers.

There is no such thing of doing it for free. People do something for something, but not
necessary for money. Some people releases their source code so that people will acknowledge
them. Some people want people to review their code, some people want other people to help
them, and some people believe that open source is a good business model (free software,
but to customize, pay them to write new functionality).

Different people value different thing. Maybe some people like to be "acknowledged" than
getting some money.
