Personal VPN/VPS LAN Question and Theory #1
I am currently sitting in a doctor's office waiting room thinking about Virtual box VMs. I am pretty sure this is already how this stuff is done, but I wouldn't mind any thoughts anyone has on the subject.

I was thinking of setting up a VPS using a switch, a VLAN, and multiple servers running 2+ virtual servers. The question I have, as I'm more familiar with physical networking is, would I be able to use the switch and, keeping the server array confined to the switch, be able to link an Ethernet cable to the actual internet connection (bare metal) and have it allow for VPS online access? Would experimenting with any such setup affect how my bare metal router interacts with the rest of the physical network?

Basically: Can I connect a VLAN to the internet without it interacting with any other machines attached to the router? Can I run a personal network as well as a hosting array without interaction?

Apologies if I'm being stupid and someone has a half second answer for this. In my opinion the switch would separate the VLAN from the LAN, and the VPS array would only move the data from one port at the router, which can be isolated from the rest of the data flow.

Anyone care to comment?

I'm slightly confused by what you're asking.
But here's my shot at replying.

You can set each VM to use it's own Virtual Switch, however you're still going to need to VLAN the traffic from the Virtual Host to your router and then out.
Also an easier way If I'm going to be honest from your suggesting would be -
- Set a machine Physical/Virtual with a Static IP
- Put the machine on it's own VLAN
- Firewall the VLAN on your Router so It can't communicate with any other VLANS.

If I've mis-understood please elaborate. What are you trying to achieve?
